Renaissance Visions

Myth and Art
Paperback, Full Color, 144 pages - $39.95

In Renaissance Visions, Stanford University professor Patrick Hunt discusses the influence of Greek and Roman mythology on Renaissance art. He highlights and interprets the historical context of some of the most famous (and beautiful) pieces. These include Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Caravaggio's Narcissus. These magnificent masterworks are reproduced in full color. Also included in the book are detailed views of specific elements in the paintings. These enhance the text descriptions and add visual interest throughout the text.

Did You Know? Patrick Hunt has published other titles on art and history with University Readers: Alpine Archaeology, Rembrandt: His Life in Art, and Myths for All Time.

COMING SPRING 2008!

Two New Titles:
Macroeconomics: Theory and Policy 2nd Edition
Microeconomics: Theory and Policy 2nd Edition

by Dr. Bagher Modjtahedi

Are you looking for an economics textbook that offers more than just a collection of facts? Dr. Bagher Modjtahedi of the UC Davis faculty has applied more than twenty years of experience teaching economics and finance to present macroeconomic and microeconomic theory in a clear and accessible manner. Macroeconomics: Theory and Practice (2nd Edition) and Microeconomics: Theory and Practice (2nd Edition) are analysis- and policy-oriented and are specifically designed for first-year students.

Macroeconomics
Rather than being bombarded by disparate facts and figures, first-time students are taught how to conduct macroeconomic analysis by using real-life scenarios, clear examples, and concise language. Macroeconomics introduces the goals of full employment, price stability, and long-term growth from the beginning and revisits them throughout the text. This book presents empirical evidence to support particular models and theories. For example, using the empirical data, the book develops the Phillips curve as a tool to analyze inflation and unemployment rather than presenting it merely as a menu of choices.

Microeconomics
Undergraduates will enjoy and learn from Modjtahedi's fresh and innovative approach to microeconomics. The book is analysis and policy oriented. The role of economic policy is introduced from the beginning to teach students how to analyze situations for economic efficiency and weigh whether any government policy is justified. Modjtahedi clearly explains the relationships between seemingly unrelated topics and demonstrates, for example, how perfect competition, monopoly pricing, externalities, public goods, and asymmetric information are related to each other and how they affect every day life. Macroeconomics: Theory and Practice (2nd Edition) and Microeconomics: Theory and Practice (2nd Edition) helps students to understand and appreciate the role economic theories play in our government system and our society.

New Online General Biology Course

Are you looking for a way to teach more students with fewer resources? That was the dilemma facing Dr. Robert Pozos, who teaches multiple large sections of the non-major introductory biology course every semester at San Diego State University. For the past five years, he's been developing an online solution that combines modular, web-based reading materials and interactive student evaluations (quizzes and exams) with flexible course management tools.

Dr. Pozos has a distinguished background in biomedical research as well as teaching. He has thoroughly tested his course, BioEspresso: General Biology, with over 5,000 students to date and dozens of teaching assistants and is now ready to offer it for use to other professors.

Students pay $79.95 each for access to BioEspresso: General Biology. You can offer it to your students — for Fall 2008 only — for a special introductory per-student price of $64.95. That includes student access to all the modules, some superb images, dynamically generated quiz and exam items written by the author, and a message and grade-tracking system. Adopting BioEspresso: General Biology for your course gives you access to tools for customizing the content and the course design and for tracking and motivating students.

BioEspresso doesn't just digitize content, as so many other new biology products do. It is designed also to:

• Help you customize the content and keep track of student progress
• Save you time and effort while enriching the student experience
• Get students to take responsibility for their own learning
• Keep the price to students significantly lower than the cost of a standard textbook
